General Carrera Lake Chile: A Guide to South America’s Turquoise Wonder
By Journey of Life/ February 17th, 2026
Known by the ancestral Tehuelche people as «Chelenko» (waters of storms), General Carrera Lake Chile is the largest lake in the country and the second-largest in South America. Spanning over 1,850 square kilometers and shared with Argentina (where it is called Lake Buenos Aires), this massive body of water is famous for its intense turquoise color and the ancient geological formations that rise from its depths.
Geological and Geographic Wonders
Extreme Depth: Reaching depths of up to 590 meters, it is one of the deepest lakes in the world, carved by massive glacial movements.
Glacial Flour: The lake’s iconic color comes from «glacial flour»—fine sediment suspended in the water from the melting glaciers of the Northern Ice Fields.
Binational Heritage: While the western side (Chilean) is mountainous and lush, the eastern side (Argentine) opens into the vast Patagonian steppe.

FAQs: Solving the Traveler’s Doubts
Is the water in General Carrera Lake safe to drink?
Yes. The lake is fed by pristine glacial meltwater. In most remote areas and within local villages, the water is considered among the purest in Chile. However, we always recommend using a reusable filter bottle if you are hiking far from established settlements.
How do I cross from one side of the lake to the other?
There is a car ferry service connecting Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez with Chile Chico. The crossing takes about 2 hours and offers some of the most dramatic views of the lake’s vastness. Booking in advance is essential during the high season (Jan-Feb).
Can I swim in General Carrera Lake?
While the water is crystal clear and inviting, it is glacially cold (averaging 6°C to 10°C). Swimming is only recommended for very short periods or for those wearing specialized wetsuits, which are provided in our kayaking tours.
What is the best way to drive around the lake?
The road between Puerto Rio Tranquilo and Puerto Guadal is one of the most dangerous yet beautiful sections of the Carretera Austral. It is a narrow, winding gravel road carved into the cliffs. A high-clearance vehicle and experienced driving are highly recommended.
Does the wind affect travel plans?
Significantly. The lake is famous for its sudden «whitecaps» and strong gusts. The Chilean Navy often closes the ports for safety. We recommend staying at least two nights in Puerto Rio Tranquilo to ensure a window of good weather for your tour.
